The Candy Sorting Committee Has Convened

Three snowmen stand by a pumpkin, with candy labeled "CHOCOLATE," "MAYBE," and "ABSOLUTELY NOT."

Every October, Snowman Falls commits. Not casually. The porch lights go on early, the corn maze gets a new sign, and the residents take on the season with the full confidence of someone who has never once checked the forecast. I spent the month taking notes. This is what happened, and all of it now lives in Halloween in Snowman Falls .

The committees are in session

The Candy Sorting Committee meets on the front porch with three bins: Chocolate, Maybe and Absolutely Not. Deliberations are serious. Over at the corn maze, two residents stand beside a sign that reads We're Not Lost, and one of them has already settled into a small puddle, which he considers a temporary setback. The new scarecrow reports that everything is Working Great. The crows have not filed a response.

Costume season

Count Chillula waits under a lamppost in his cape, very much in character. It's Alive-Ish arrives with bolts and a hand mirror to confirm it, Convincingly Undead practices his vampire look in front of another mirror, and Maybe Too Realistic chose a full dinosaur suit and stands by the decision. The Perfect Fit went with a carved pumpkin for a head. Then there is Temporary Fix, currently a snowman head resting on a jack-o-lantern, and The Headless Snowman, who carries his head under one arm and would like everyone to stop making a fuss.

Small incidents, fully handled

Grand Theft Carrot remains an open case. The pumpkin beside him is wearing a carrot nose, and nobody is saying anything. Losing Your Head won the apple bobbing in a manner the judges are still discussing. Any Minute Now documents a flying lesson for a row of residents on broomsticks, and the landing is part of the lesson. Recipe For Disaster stirs a bubbling cauldron with a checklist, and the first ingredient is one carrot. His own.

For the house with the porch light on

Giving Too Much hands the smallest trick-or-treater on the street a much bigger scoop than anyone planned, and it looks a lot like someone you know. The one with the light on by four, the full-size bars, and a costume decided back in the heat of summer. Identity Theft, a stack of pumpkins arranged into a very convincing neighbor, has also taken up residence in the Thanksgiving Shop, for anyone whose season runs straight through to the pie.
